1st East Grinstead Scout Group
Centenary 1908 - 2008

The van, which Doctor has provided, is proving a great convenience, and we are now able to take the smaller boys (who could not be expected to cycle, with the usual week-end traffic) to Nutley and lead them into the paths of Scouting. Thank you Doctor!

At Doctor’s invitation we had a Troop of boys down from Cricklewood for weekend in June. They appeared to have enjoyed themselves, and went home full of "Ultra-Violet" and fresh air. Our P.L.'s and senior boys ran the camp for them; very well too, and also had a jolly good time. We hope the Cricklewood Scouts will come again. I am pleased to say that it is in running a show such as this our fellows excel

(Now for the "rough stuff") It has been noticed that camping this season has not been altogether so clean as usual. Toffee papers, orange peel, greasy cooking gear etc, showing lack of care and guidance by the P.L.'s and those in charge, which is very bad, especially as the Troop has always had such a good reputation in this respect I feel sure it is due to as certain extent to the large number of "Tenderfoots " or new boys.

Also why, oh why, must small boys wake, rag, and rise about 3.30 a.m. on a Sunday? ? ? This disease must, and will, be cured. I hope as the season proceeds we will have some good CLEAN camping and many more summer weekends.

A FOUR-DAY GYM TOUR.

Nine senior Scouts were selected to accompany Doctor and Mr. Goldsmith, our P.T. instructor, on a tour in order to demonstrate the Danish system of Gymnastics to audiences in Salisbury and Swindon.

We started on Thursday morning, April 14th. Seven of us went in the new Troop Van and the rest followed on Doctor's car some hours later. It was pouring with rain for most of the journey, but at length we arrived in Winchester. There it had stopped raining. When the car: had been garaged we went to the Eastgate hotel, close to a gigantic statue of Alfred the Great. While we were there we visited the College, which is a beautiful old place, with magnificently decorated rooms and halls with the most lovely old pictures imaginable. We saw the Chapel with its stained-glass windows, some of which were very old and some quite recent, but all were exceedingly beautiful.
