'SO DIFFERENT'
"Modern training schemes are geared to what the boy of today wants," he said. "But everything is so different now. Lord Baden Powell could never have envisaged the changes that would take place." Nevertheless, the real meaning of Scouting still remains. The Law and Promise has held the Movement together, and despite considerable structural alterations, the basic principles and aims are the same. Perhaps the most recent and controversial changes, are the introduction of mixed units in many districts. Mr Cooper is greatly in favour of this new addition, and fully supports the 30 strong Anderida Mixed Unit in East Grinstead, run by his eldest son, Michael, and son-in-law, Alan Wilson, and chaired by his younger son, Robert.
1975 Edgar Cooper Retires
When he retires at the end of December, Mr Cooper will have been the sixth, and one of the longest serving DC's, in 68 years of Scouting in the area. Although he is retiring as DC, Scouting will still remain a very major part of his life, for he intends to take up the position as Assistant DC and donate much of his time to furthering facilities at the District Headquarters, the Alfred Wagg Centre in Portland Road, and developing training schemes.
Mr Ian Hume, of 5 Crossways Avenue, previously the Group Scout Leader of the 1st East Grinstead, who has worked on the District Team for several months, is to take over as the new DC from late December
