SCOUT PAGEANT MADE A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

HISTORY was written in HISTORY records of East Grinstead and district Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies on Friday and Saturday when 300 uniformed young people took part in an impressive pageant held on Mount Noddy Recreation Ground.
It was the largest and most ambitious event of its kind ever staged by local Scout troops — a fitting tribute to mark the centenary of their founder. Lord Baden-Powell, and the 50 year jubilee of the Scouting movement.
Turning a blind eye to the cold wind cutting across the park, several hundred people formed a semi-circle to set the stage for a pageant full of colour, interest and meaning.
WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG

Sitting or standing there to one side many fathers must have silently thought back to their own Scouting days. Of the times they enjoyed building camp fires, erecting tents, making bridges from tree trunks, singing all the traditional Scout songs round a camp fire, and not forgetting the companionship of those who shared the same interests. Many memories must have been relived for mothers, too, seeing  their young daughters dressed in blue or brown as they might have been at one time in the past. Whether it brought back happy memories or simply presented a spectacle of colour made little difference to those who eat and watched.

FROM ACORN TO OAK

From Acorn to Oak was the theme of the pageant, showing how the movement of Scouts and Guides developed from the time they were born just 50 years ago.
For the Scouting movement of today there are nearly seven million members spread over 100 different countries, making it a common bond in many nations of the world.
