1st East Grinstead Scout Group
Centenary 1908 - 2008

As soon as swimming commenced we shut down our weekly Gym classes, to allow the boys, according to the S.M., to try and drown themselves, but really to encourage them in outdoor pursuits of health. We have, however, had to restart very soon as this month we gave a show at the Hartfield British Legion Fete (a hardy annual this) and have promised to give another show on the West Street Cricket Ground for the East Grinstead British Legion Bank Holiday Fete.

The Paramount Film News asked us to do a show for them; this came off at the Hartfield Fete, as they wanted an enthusiastic and motley crowd for effects. The boys needless to say were very keen to do it and some I fear had visions!

After these two summer shows we intend to close down again till September. Plans for re-opening are already being formed including more and better boxing.

With regard to Boxing the following is an extract from East Grinstead Observer on May 7th

‘EAST GRINSTEAD BOY SCOUTS’

A very successful Boxing Match was held at the Scout Hall, Moat Road with the Lingfield & Dormansland Scouts on Wednesday May 4th.  There were six contests and the form was very good. The boxing was clean and the style was particularly good. It would be invidious to pick out any individual boys as the hitting throughout was hard and straight, and the keenness and pluck shown reflects great credit on the Troops concerned

The following is a list of the events and winners;

10 Stone

E Weller (Lingfield) v W C F Best (East Grinstead) A very close contest won on points by Best

9 Stone

K Lindford (Lingfield) v G Ferrari (East Grinstead) Another good fight, in which the Lingfield lad did most of the attacking and won
