EAST GRINSTEAD BOY SCOUTS.
1st July 1913 - 30th June 1914
In presenting our Fourth Annual Report the Committee have adopted the same course as in previous years and set out below the report of the Scoutmasters of the work done during the year ended 30th June, 1914. EDWARD BLOUNT, Chairman.
The progress of the Troop during the year 1913-1914 has been satisfactory. We have purposely kept the numbers down to 38 as we find that it is not expedient to work with a larger number of boys.
The chief event has been the installation by the boys of a complete Marconi Transmitting and Receiving Set. The older boys have worked steadily at this and several of them are already competent Wireless Operators.
Last August we had a very successful camp at East Preston, when everything, including the catering and cooking, was done by the boys themselves:; 33 boys attended this camp and the week proved most enjoyable, and at the same time taught the boys what they can do when they really try. The new Headquarters has been open every week-night since its completion, and both the Room and the Garden have been very fully utilized. The most satisfactory feature of the last 12 months has been the great improvement in manners and morale throughout the Troop. We venture to hope that are just beginning to feel the effects of five years' continuous efforts and that each succeeding year will now bring still greater improvement.
The Routine Work Gymnastics, Boxing, Gardening, Carpentry, &c., has been kept up, and we have had several successful week-end camps on Ashdown Forest this summer.
We would like to draw attention to the fact that the boys have subscribed the sum of £21. 2s. 3d. this year, so that as far as running expenses go the Troop is almost self-supporting, and the outside subscriptions are available for extending the efficiency of' the Troop.
