East Grinstead Observer Saturday 18th September 1909

East Grinstead Boy Scouts at Dormans Land

Wednesday last was a red letter day in the annals of East Grinstead Scouts. Captain Labouchere-Hillyer, USA, invited the scouts to a camp supper, he supplying the meat, vegetables etc., for the lads to cook and giving them a practical lesson in scout cooking and fire building.

Upon arrival at Hollowden, the scouts were drawn up on the lawn and inspected by General Sir Edward Chapman, KCB, who expressed himself to Captain Labouchere-Hillyer and to Acting Scout Master Bingham as very well pleased with the troops general appearance and discipline.

After a few kindly words of welcome from General Sir Edward Chapman the troop was dismissed. In a few minutes the camp was lighted up by camp fires and cooking for supper begun.

At 10 o’clock after a glorious time around camp fires the order ‘fall in’ was given, three hearty cheers were given to General Sir Edward Chapman and three for Captain Labouchere-Hillyer, who answered in a short speech.  ‘Quick March’ and the lads swung off for Grinstead and home The scouts present were;

Alf BINGHAM (Acting Scout Master), Leonard BINGHAM, Harry MITCHELL (Patrol Leaders) Fred WINTER, Leo MILLER (Corporals), Tom BEARD, Reg BARDEN, Harry PEDDESDEN, Arthur GATTON, Ralph PENTECOST,  Bernard SMEED, Fred BROOKER, Harry CULLEN, Charlie THOMPSON, Abe BURNETT, George SMITH, Charles BAKER and Harry WELLER.
